A new EuCARE publication ‘SARS-CoV-2 trends in Italy, Germany and Portugal and school opening during the period of Omicron variant dominance: a quasi-experimental study’ was published this week in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases .
The manuscript analyses the impact of schools reopening after summer holidays in 2022 on SARS-CoV-2 dissemination in Italy, Germany and Portugal, during the Omicron variant circulation.
The analysis concluded that there was no causal impact of school reopening on the spread of Omicron. In fact, a significant reduction of Rc was found after schools reopened, p articularly among the student population. Geography, seasonality and and the behavior of the population may have exerted a more substantial influence.
