The article was published online on the journal Viruses, and involves several partner from the EuCARE consortium.
The article investigates the risk of Post COVID-19 condition (PCC) in an international cohort according to viral variants and included 7699 hospitalized patients in six centers. The study estimated the proportion of the effect of wildtype (WT) virus compared to Omicron variant on PCC.
The results of the study showed that Omicron compared to WT was associated with a reduced risk of PCC. Although, there was observed a higher risk with the Delta and Alpha variants compared to the wild type.
One of the main conclusion of the study suggested that the reduction in the PCC burden over time may be associated with the Omicron phase of the pandemic, and that the difference in risk seen with the Omicron compared to Wuhan (original variant) virus appeared to be explained by severity of the disease during the acute phase.
This EuCARE study on PCC was part of the EuCARE Clinical cohorts .
