EuCARE partners from ASST Santi Paolo were present at the 34th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2024 in Barcelona Spain.
Dr. Andrea Santoro from the ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo presented a poster entitled “Reduction of post COVID-19 condition during the Omicron wave: results from the EuCARE POSTCOVID Study” and was awarded “Top Rated Poster” during the conference.
The poster explored the incidence of Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) during the Omicron wave. The study observed a reduction in the incidence of Post COVID-19 condition (PCC) following the Omicron variant and investigated the risk of PCC and PCC clusters according to viral variants in a cohort of hospitalized patients in 6 centers.
The results shoed a 1313/7248 (18.1%) hospitalized patients returned for a post-COVID visit. Most common phenotypes of PCC were fatigue, respiratory sequelae and brain fog. A reduced risk of PCC was observed following Omicron infection, suggesting a possible reduction of the PCC burden over time (AOR 0.10, 95% CI 0.09-0.13, p < 0.001). Our counterfactual mediation analysis showed that a large proportion (41%) of the effect of WT virus compared to Omicron variant on PCC risk appeared to be mediated by increased disease severity during the acute phase.
