As an EMHH 2026 Endorser, EuCARE was proud to support a meeting that continues to bring together researchers, clinicians and healthcare professionals to discuss the latest developments in infectious diseases and antiviral research.

The event also provided an opportunity for EuCARE partners to meet, exchange updates and discuss the next steps of the project.

SARS-CoV-2 and Ebola virus are both zoonotic pathogens, but they differ significantly in how they spread, the disease they cause and their public health impact.

While SARS-CoV-2 led to a global pandemic due to its highly efficient human-to-human transmission, Ebola outbreaks are typically more localized.

Understanding the rationale for these differences is essential for effective outbreak preparedness, surveillance and response.

This post marks the beginning of a new EuCARE series exploring key aspects of SARS-CoV-2 and Ebola virus, including transmission, outbreak dynamics, public health measures and lessons for future pandemic preparedness.

EuCARE will be there, contributing to the exchange of knowledge and collaboration that drive progress in infectious disease research.

ANDV prevention strategies focus mainly on environmental safety and infection control.

Key measures include rodent control, ventilation of contaminated spaces, wet-cleaning methods to avoid aerosolization, surface disinfection and PPE use by healthcare workers.

Although rare, person-to-person transmission has been reported, meaning isolation of infected individuals may sometimes be necessary.

Unlike SARS-CoV-2, no vaccine is currently available for ANDV.

Camilla Tincati, EuCARE collaborator, presented a scientific talk on Long COVID

On May 18th, Camilla Tincati, MD, PhD, Associate Professor at the University of Milan, presented a scientific talk on Long COVID at the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness (MassCPR) at Harvard Medical School.

The presentation, entitled “Clinical and Viro-Immunological Determinants of Long COVID: A Journey from the First Wave in Italy to the Biology of Persistent Disease”, highlighted the work developed within WP3 of the EuCARE Consortium.

The talk focused on clinical and biological findings in patients with PASC, contributing to ongoing efforts to better understand the mechanisms and long-term impact of Long COVID.

MassCPR continues bringing together researchers and clinicians dedicated to infectious diseases and post-infectious clinical syndromes, fostering scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing across institutions and countries.

Comparing key characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 and ANDV

This is the first post in our series comparing key characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 and ANDV.

Understanding how viruses spread is essential for public health preparedness.

While SARS-CoV-2 spreads efficiently from person to person, Andes virus (ANDV) follows a very different transmission pattern.

ANDV is primarily transmitted from rodents to humans through exposure to contaminated environments, including contact with rodent urine or feces. Human-to-human transmission has also been reported, but remains rare and usually associated with very close contact.

Compared to coronaviruses, hantaviruses are also known to remain more stable in the environment, reinforcing the importance of surveillance and prevention measures.

Current ANDV cases linked to the recent cruise ship outbreak are being closely monitored by health authorities and researchers.

Once again the AREVIR meeting brought together an international community of researchers to share insights, challenge perspectives, and advance the understanding of viral infections .

Across the day, the programme highlighted key topics shaping current research, from viral dynamics and immune responses to emerging challenges in infectious diseases and public health.

The EuCARE /VIROMARKERS session contributed to this exchange, reinforcing the importance of collaboration across disciplines and countries to address complex health threats.

Moments like these remind us that progress in science is built collectively – through dialogue, shared data, and continuous questioning.

We’re launching a new series of short testimonials from the people behind the project. Researchers, clinicians, and partners across Europe and beyond, sharing what EuCARE represents to them.

We start with the team from Pomeranian Medical University, reflecting on collaboration, science, and the shared mission that connects us.
