Pandemic Preparedness Rome Conference – Keynote lectures part 1

What did COVID-19 teach us about responding to a pandemic — and its long-term consequences? 🌍🔬

At the Pandemic Preparedness Rome Conference, two keynote lectures explored different but equally important dimensions of the COVID-19 experience.

Prof. Mika Salminen, from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, reflected on the challenges of pandemic response, highlighting the importance of proportionality, public trust and sustainable healthcare capacity.

Prof. Steven Deeks, from the University of California, San Francisco, explored the continuing challenges of Long COVID, from understanding its biological mechanisms to developing effective treatments.

Together, their reflections remind us that pandemic preparedness is not only about responding to an immediate crisis. It is also about adapting to evidence, protecting communities and addressing long-term health consequences.
