A recent article published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases explores the impact of bacterial and viral co-infections in adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across different SARS-CoV-2 variant periods.
📌 “Bacterial and viral co-infections in adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 throughout the pandemic: A Multinational Cohort Study in the EuCARE Project”
Based on data from nearly 30,000 hospitalizations across five European countries, the study revealed:
- A significant rise in co-infections during the Omicron wave
- Co-infections were associated with a higher risk of in-hospital mortality
- Findings underscore the importance of sustained microbiological surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship strategies
This important work was led by Pontus Hedberg and co-authored by several EuCARE researchers.
