Two abstracts from the EuCARE project have been presented at CROI 2026

We are pleased to share that two abstracts from the EuCARE project have been presented at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI).

One of the abstracts, “Gut–Lung Axis Disruption in Long COVID Uncovered by Integrated Immuno-Epithelial-Microbial Profiling”, was presented by Roberta Rovito the Clinic of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at San Paolo Hospital, University of Milan.

The study highlights how disruption of the gut–lung axis may contribute to the development of Long COVID, showing evidence of lung epithelial damage, microbial translocation, and immune alterations already during the acute phase of infection.

The second abstract, “Immunosuppression and mortality risk among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the EuCARE study” was presented by Björn-Erik Ole Jensen from the University Hospital Düsseldorf, Heinrich Heine University, Duesseldorf, Germany.

This second study tried to investigate if there is still an increased risk of mortality among immunosuppressed individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. The study highlighted that immunocompromising conditions increases in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients, particularly those with pneumonia, even in the Omicron era.

👏 Congratulations to the authors and to all collaborators involved in these important works.
