NEW PUBLICATION | What can SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the bloodstream tell us about COVID-19 and Long COVID?

A new study by Roberta Rovito and colleagues, for the EuCARE Study Group, published in Clinical Microbiology and Infection, explored the relationship between circulating SARS-CoV-2 RNA, acute COVID-19 severity and post-COVID condition (PCC).

The research included 442 individuals with confirmed COVID-19, with a subgroup assessed approximately three months after infection.

🔎 Key findings:

  • Detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the blood was associated with critical COVID-19 during acute infection.
  • No association was found between circulating viral RNA and post-COVID condition at the three-month follow-up.

These findings contribute to our understanding of COVID-19 and suggest that the biological mechanisms involved in acute severe disease and post-COVID condition may differ.

💙 Another contribution from the EuCARE research community to advancing scientific knowledge beyond the project.
