Anders Sönnerborg, a EuCARE partner from Karolinska Institute (KI) was present as symposium moderator in the prestigious meeting of the European Renal Association (ERA), one of the biggest nephrology associations worldwide and the largest in Europe. This meeting took place in Stockholm between 23-26th of May 2024.
The symposium by AstraZeneca was about preparing for the future of SARS-CoV-2 in patients with chronic kidney disease. The speakers were Mustafa ARICI, Medical Doctor, Professor of Medicine (Nephrology) at Hacettepe University in Ankara-TURKEY, a member of the Science Academy of TURKEY, and Board Member to Turkish Society of Nephrology and Prof Julia Weinmann-Menk, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Kidney transplantation, Senior physician, Academic Director of the Mainz Research School of Translational Medicine and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine.
In this symposium some key subjects were discussed and major difficulties to the study and management of COVID-19 were highlighted.
One main problem debated was the impact that COVID-19 still has in immunocompromised individuals, even though some people and physicians do not consider COVID-19 a threat anymore.
Another hot topic of this symposium was the poor response to the vaccination in individuals with end-stage kidney disease and what are the strategies that could be adopted.
The EuCARE project was also discussed due to the importance of evaluating the response to vaccine by both neutralizing antibodies and cellular immunity, a study presently performed in EuCare by Prof Maurizio Zazzi and Associate professor Marcus Buggert, EuCARE partners from University of Sienna and KI. respectively.
